Week 28

These children are bringing their containers to a public well across the street from our apartment.  The area of Harare where I live has fewer very poor people than what you would find in other areas of town and certainly less than areas out of town.  But this is how some of my neighbors get their water each day.

This sight greeted us as we came out of the restaurant after our Single Sister Friday Night tradition.

This woman is "sweeping" in front of her store before opening for business.  I see her often when on my early morning walk.  Sunrise is earlier now so Diana and I walk from 5:30-6:30.  We pass many of the same people every morning; students walking to school, people walking or biking to work.  We love sharing "Hellos" and "Good Mornings".  They return our greetings with big smiles and some of the men put their hands over their hearts as a respectful greeting for "Go-Gos" (older women).  The cool of the morning is always so refreshing.  It's my favorite "just for me" time of day.

Nothing you see in this picture is illegal.  There are no trains, busses or any form of public transportation.  Very few people have cars.  So they use Combis.  They are privately owned and are very affordabe, about $1 or less.  They are everywhere and dominate the roads.  On a two lane road, if they want to pass a car, they make a third lane in the middle and blink their headlights at oncoming drivers to let them know they are not pulling over. They pack them full inside and out to make the most profit they can.

I am going on an adventure on Friday and Saturday.  Naturally, you might wonder, wonder, wonder, wonder, wonder, wonder, wonder where I am going.  The clue is underlined.  I will post pictures next Sunday.  I am excited!
