Week 26
I spoke of my friend, Reeve, last week. Here is another way she helps the people in the areas around Harare. For those who are born in distant areas, especially those born at home, it is common that their birth is never registered. Therefore, they are not eligible for birth certificates or identity documents. Without these, it is almost impossible for their children to attend school. These documents also make it possible for people to marry civilly. They are often married according to the rules of their culture, but not according to Zimbabwe law. Couples need to be legally married in order to be baptised and attend the temple. Young people need the documents to be able to apply for passports in order to serve missions. Reeve saw the need and stepped in. Well, she actually drove in. For the past two weeks, she has gotten up between 2:30 and 3:30 AM 5 days each week to travel to Chabwino, about 45 minutes away to pick up groups of people and bring them back to Harare in her truck to wait in line at a government agency so they can get their documents. Thank you, Reeve!
She is also connected to an organization called Tiny Tim's Foundation for Kids. They make wooden cars to be given to children throughout the world. I don't even know how many of these cars she has but I think it must be in the thousands. She gave us a boxful and we have handed all of ours out. These boys were so happy when Reeve gave them each a car.
I taught a class at a ward activity with the other senior sisters yesterday. The people who attended will be going to the temple for the first time in Johannesburg in December. We each taught a class for 25 minutes and then the people rotated to the next class. My class was called The Temple Endowment. I loved being able to share some of my experiences as an ordinance worker in Atlanta.
We got to teach in a real chapel. There are not many in our area. Most congregations meet in rented spaces. When we got to the parking lot after teaching our classes, it was full of young men and women returning from FSY.
My friend, Fortunate, comes to our apartment twice a month to clean. On Friday, she brought her nine year old daughter with her. She has never seen a Disney movie. Here she is watching the original Cinderella animated movie on my laptop. She LOVED IT!
Favorite part of Nursery.
